According to the USDA, the average intake of calories for women is 2000 and for men the calorie intake is 2500. The number of calories is based on the gender to which you belong. The body needs a certain amount of calories everyday to do its basic functions. Even though you are not active and lead a sedentary lifestyle, you still need certain calories to do the regular functions of the body. There are many people who consider calories to be the real culprits for those trying to lose weight but the fact is it is the calories that help you find your ideal weight. Consuming only very few calories will not give you the required energy to enable your body get what it wants. Normally, it is recommended that a minimum of 1200 calories per day is consumed for the body to perform its basic functions. However, the best way to find out how many calories you should eat to lose weight is to take the basal metabolic rate (BMR) into consideration. BMR refers to the minimum amount of calories that your body requires when it is in a resting stage in order to perform the basic functions like pumping of the heart, breathing, etc.

The amount of calories that we consume comes from sources like carbohydrates, fats and proteins. The amount of calories that we consume should be a balance of all these three sources. It is said that one gram of fat is equivalent to nine calories. Likewise, one gram of protein or carbohydrate is equivalent to four calories. It is very important that you have a balanced meal when you are planning to lose weight. According to the USDA Food Guide Pyramid, 45 to 65 percent of your calorie consumption should be from carbohydrates, 20 to 35 percent from fat, and the remaining from proteins.

Finally, what you eat determines how many calories you should eat to lose weight. In order to increase your body metabolism rate try to have four to six meals in a day. Ensure that you have small meals at regular intervals. Let your breakfast and lunch be the bigger meals for the day since you will have more time to burn the calories.
